Dumbledore
As any Harry Potter fan knows Dumbledore is the wise old headmaster of Hogwarts. But did you know dumbledore is an old English word for bumble bee? Oh yes, here at Arthur & Henry, we're not just purveyors of fine organic shirts but also conveyers of fun facts.
And now to more serious things. Bees are under threat around the world for a variety of reasons including disease, chemical and habitat loss. In the last 20 years there has been a dramatic 50 per cent decline in bee numbers in Britain alone.
Whether you consider them cute and fluffy or nasty and stinging, bees are pretty essential. Not just for honey, scrummy on toast with lashings of butter...mmm.... no wait, where were we? Oh yes, bees, pretty damn important when it comes to pollination which is pretty damn important in making sure that we actually have food to eat. Without them, no bread to spread our honey on.
Things we can do:
Eat lots of honey from local beekeepers
Plant bee friendly plants (if you have a garden)
Write, lobby and petition for policy changes to protect bees and their habitats.
And for a bit of brilliant reading about honey around the world, past and present, we suggest Honey & Dust by Piers Moore Ede
